The focus of your role

The QA Test Automation Engineer is responsible for developing test scripts and use case scenarios in order to test product configurations and project deliverables. This position is also responsible for writing test cases/scripts, test case automation and execution of all testing required to ensure that the software configurations meet the specified business requirements for the project. Additionally, this role will conduct functional testing that may include application integration, system, system/network integration and acceptance testing; this may also include non-functional testing such as security, accessibility, performance, volume, load, and fall-back.

The QA Test Automation Engineer is expected to have a proven development background and be comfortable working within a cross-functional team building high-quality products.  This role covers all aspects of the Agile test lifecycle, with a focus on testing web-based applications.

  • Develops, writes, and maintains the test plans, scripts, and processes
  • Provides inputs and escalates issues and coordinates with development team if required under the guidance of the Project lead
  • Develops and plans change implementation
  • Provides input into product release planning
  • Conducts testing of products and processes to establish functionality and effectiveness
  • Determine what modifications are needed after testing
  • Documents results and observations after inspections and audits


Experience and competencies

All positions at Placecube are “not office based”. Staff spend the majority of their time working from their home base, with occasional visits to client sites for project meetings.  Staff are expected to attend the scheduled meetings for sales and project team meetings and any training and awareness activities.  This requires discipline, self-motivation, initiative, and the ability to operate independently in the absence of close management supervision.

Specific skills and experience are essential, unless stated otherwise:

  • 3 + years or more related experience
  • Ability to interpret a variety of technical information
  • Experience with manual testing
  • Ability to understand and write Java code and other scripts for test automation
  • Experience with test-driven development and/or behaviour-driven development techniques and tools
  • Experience with performance/load testing tools such as Grinder and/or JMeter
  • Working knowledge of defect management tools such as Jira
  • Knowledge of WCAG 2.0 website accessibility
  • Experience working within a Continuous Delivery environment (desirable)
  • Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, draw valid conclusions and provide solutions
  • Good understanding of software version control
  • Experience with automated testing techniques and tools
  • Confident developing automated tests using Selenium WebDriver
  • Practical experience of Cucumber and/or JBehave
  • Working knowledge of Continuous Integration tools and processes
  • Understand the benefits of both manual and automated testing, and know when best to use one over the other
  • Knowledge of web security threats and OWASP, and experience of security testing
