Common integration architectures

Point-to-point (P2P)

A direct, tightly coupled connection built between two specific systems that requires custom code for data translation. While highly effective for simple, isolated environments, it scales poorly as adding more applications creates an unmanageable "spaghetti" network of dependencies.

Hub-and-spoke

A centralised architecture where a single core broker (the hub) manages all communications between connected applications (the spokes). This eliminates direct dependencies between individual systems, making it significantly easier to add or remove applications without disrupting the wider ecosystem.

Middleware (ESB)

A highly scalable, decentralised architecture that uses a shared software bus to route, transform, and orchestrate data messages across the entire enterprise. It allows heterogeneous systems to interact seamlessly through standard protocols, providing robust message queueing, security, and complex routing rules.
